Abstract

The study showed the relationship between skill acquisition and poverty
alleviation as a critical way of addressing economic imbalance among
undergraduate students in Lagos State University, Nigeria, with two research
questions and two hypotheses. The study adopted the descriptive correlational
design, data was collected using surveys and interviews. The sample
comprised 200 participants who were selected randomly and data were
analysed using the Percentages and Pearson Product Moment correlational
coefficient for the stated hypotheses at a 0.05 level. The findings revealed a
strong positive correlation between skill acquisition and poverty alleviation. In
conclusion, skill acquisition correlates with poverty alleviation among
undergraduate students. It also, suggested that investing in skill development
programmes can play a pivotal role in breaking the circuit of poverty and
encouraging economic growth among the youth. It was recommended that
undergraduate students should focus on skills that are in demand in the job
market, the need for career counselling services to help students identify their
interests and so on. There should be an integrated vocational training
programme in an undergraduate curriculum and students should be allowed to
offer entrepreneurial skills courses as a prerequisite.
