IBIKUNLE Ganiyu Abiona & MESEWAKU Catherine Uloma
Abstract
This study examined the relationship between conflict management strategies
and academic goals achievement in Lagos State tertiary institutions. The
sample for the study comprised 330 participants which consists of 165
academic staff and 165 non-teaching staffers randomly selected from the three
Lagos State owned tertiary institutions. A self-constructed questionnaire titled
“Conflict Management Strategies and Academic Goals Achievement
Questionnaire (CMSAGAQ) consisting of Conflict Management Scale (CMS)
and Academic Goals Achievement Scale (AGAS) was used to collect relevant
data. The reliability coefficient of 0.78 and 0.88 were obtained using split-half
reliability method for CMS and AGAS respectively. Pearson product moment
correlation statistics was used to test all the hypotheses formulated for the
study at 0.05 significance level. The results showed significant relationship
between conflict management strategies and academic goals achievement. Conclusion drawn from the findings suggest that conflict potentials in higher
institutions are varied, and there is need for the entire actors within the system
to recognise these potentials and deliberately make concerted efforts to curtail
their negative consequences. The study therefore recommended that regular
seminars and workshop on conflict detection, prevention and resolution skills
with positive management styles and strategies should be organise for all
stakeholders across the three tiers of higher institutions’ management.
