Abstract
Academic achievement is a topic that greatly interests educational managers, as they strive to understand the factors influencing students' academic
outcomes. This study therefore investigated the efficacy of Play activities on
Academic achievement of Pre-school Pupils in some selected primary schools
in Lagos State. The study adopted descriptive survey research design, while
random sampling method was applied at selecting the sample. The study made
use of a sample of 4 preschool teachers and 20 preschoolers from each of the
five (5) purposively selected preschools in Agege Local Government Area of
Lagos State making the total of 120 respondents. The instrument for the study
was research questionnaire used to elicit responses from respondents. The data
collected from the respondents was analysed using Chi-square statistical tools, It was revealed that there are different types of play activities like dramatic
play, sensory play, constructive play, creative play and physical play available
in public pre-schools in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria; there is significant relationship between play activities and the
academic achievement of pupils in public pre-schools within the study area
and finally, there is significant impact of play activities and the academic
achievement of pupils in public pre- schools. The study concluded that
preschool child’s cognitive development has the tendency of lying dormant. If
he/she lacks opportunities to play, the long-term capacity related to meta- cognition may be diminished. The researchers recommended that there is need
for training and re-training of teachers for skills improvement in order to
ensure that teachers update their ideas about child development.
