Undergraduate Science Education Students’ Awareness of Prospects in STEM Education to Combat Poverty.

Abstract

This paper presents undergraduate science education students’ awareness of prospects in STEM education as veritable tools that fit into globalization project for tackling and combating poverty with a view to align with sustainable development goals of the United Nation member countries. The paper adopted the descriptive survey design. 261 science education students were randomly sampled from the Department of Science and Technology Education, Lagos State University. The sample consisted of 178 females and 83 males. There were 177 biology education students, 32 chemistry education students, 11 physics education students and 42 computer science education students. A questionnaire titled “Undergraduate Science Education Students’ Awareness of Prospects in STEM Education” with a reliability co-efficient of 0.78 was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using simple percentage and Man-Whitney U test. It was revealed that undergraduate science education students generally exhibit a high level of awareness regarding the prospects residing in STEM education and there is no significant difference in the level of awareness between male and female students of the prospects in STEM education. It was concluded the science education students have high Awareness of Prospects in STEM Education to Combat Poverty. Recommendations and implications for STEM educators were made.
